Roaming Raven Samhain Special
A Four-Part Journey into the History, Folklore & Magic of Samhain
As the days shorten, the leaves begin to fall and we move towards the darker half of the year, join Paula Rolls of Roaming Raven for a special four-part journey into Samhain — one of the most fascinating and atmospheric festivals of the seasonal calendar.
Across four episodes, we’ll travel back into the landscapes and stories of early Ireland to discover where Samhain began and separate some of the genuine history from the myths that have grown around it. We’ll explore why this turning point between summer and winter became so strongly associated with the supernatural, mysterious journeys into the Otherworld, the Aos Sí, the Púca and the belief that the dead might once again draw close to the living.
We’ll also step inside the homes and communities of earlier generations to discover how this time of year was marked through fire, feasting, divination, games, disguises, protection and folklore — including some wonderfully strange customs that survived into relatively recent times.
Finally, we’ll bring Samhain into the present day and explore how modern witches and Pagans celebrate it through ancestor work, remembrance, spellcraft, divination, seasonal ritual and personal reflection, while looking at how ancient tradition, later folklore and modern witchcraft have become intertwined.
This isn’t simply the story of “ancient Halloween.” It is the story of a threshold — between summer and winter, light and darkness, the familiar and the unknown, and in folklore, between our world and the Otherworld.
So light a candle, settle in and come with me beyond the firelight.
